Design and Technology

The children at our school thoroughly enjoy the hands on and practical experiences that Design and Technology provide. It provides them with a range of immediate practical learning experiences and is invaluable for fostering a love of learning across all areas of the curriculum.  Design and Technology sparks creativity and helps develop children of all abilities as they see a project through from inspiration to reality.  We encourage our children to think like engineers, to seek ways to solve real life problems and to develop their skills of designing, creating and evaluating, taking inspiration from design though history.

Our D.T curriculum includes designing, cooking, sewing and model making with a variety of materials, which fosters imagination and innovation.

Work in D.T. reflects the world in which children live and encourages children to use creativity and imagination to solve problems. Skills are taught and practised so that:

•     Children can produce good realistic designs

•     Children consider the purpose of their design

•     Children measure and choose appropriate materials

•     Children evaluate their end results reflectively

Visits and Visitors also give children opportunities to learn about use of Design and Technology in the wider world.

The Hyde Heath Design and Technology Skills Progression Matrix is used to assess the impact of the teaching and to see where further revisiting of skills and experiences need to be given. Ongoing assessments take place though the year – which can be pieces of completed work, checks of vocabulary and pupil feedback. Teachers use this information to inform future lessons, supporting and challenging the children as they develop.
